Surgical masks for pollution protection? |
|
|
When I was in China 20 years ago, many people - tourists and locals alike - wore surgical masks on days when the air quality was very poor; is this still a common, and recommended thing to do?
Is it quite humid in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian in early June? We are taking a Yangtze cruise on Viking Cruise Line. |

Many, many, people still wear masks. As long as you are wearing them only to keep the dirt out they are OK. Most of them have poor protection against bugs.
June can be quite hot and humid in Shanghai - at least it was last year. |

HK govt information films recommend wearing them when you have a cold to prevent your stuff getting out, rather than other people's getting in. Some people wear them; I think they just look dumb without having any extra protection one way or another.
There again, I think SARS is an invented illness so what do I know? Whatever it is/was, it only affected Chinese people. |
