We are hoping to travel to China this Spring and are trying to decide how to allocate our time.

We plan to be there for about 15days. How would you allocate that time between Beijing and Shanghai?
We were also thinking about doing a side trip to Xian to see the terra cotta soldiers.

Is it easy to do from Beijing? We have never been to China and aren't sure how easy it is to fly and otherwise travel around within the country

My advice:

Shanghai, 2 days - 1 day tour in shanghai downtown, the other day go to the water town of Jiangsu Province, such as Zhouzhuang, Tongli, 2 hour bus ride from Shanghai.

Xi'an, 2 days - 1 day to the terra cotta, 1 day downtown Xi'an
Beijing, 4 days -
1st day: Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Heaven Temple
2nd day: Great Wall, (recommend the part, the Mutianyu Great Wall, well-protected, less crowded more beautiful)
3rd day: Shisanling(Mingtomb)
4th day: Summer Palace, Yuanming Garden
I also suggest you visit Hangzhou for one day when you are in Shanghai, Hangzhou is 2 hours from Shanghai, it's one of the most beautiful cities in China.
