Hi there,
I will be taking a few months to go from Hong Kong to Bangkok. I am unsure of the best way to cross over into Vietnam from China. I have a lot of time, but money is more of a concern, so I would like to avoid flights. What are some options to get from Southern China into Northern Vietnam, Hanoi area? Where can I pick up a train/other transportation, is the border crossing easy, how much money, etc.

Land borders from China: Dong Dang, Lao Cai and Mong Cai.
Opening time: 7.00-14.00 (Vtn) 6.00 -15.00 (Ch)
Some burocracy but not to much.

Dong Dang: This is the most used border. 164 kms from Hanoi and 20 km from Lang Song. Near city to border in China is Pixiang (10 kmts to border). Internacional train between Hanoi and Nanning.
Lao Cai: Train from Kunming (China) to Hanoi.
Mong Cai: 360 km form Hanoi. By bus.
