Chinese Train Tickets |

|
We are going to China in May, 2008. If I turn up at the booking office in Shanghai can I only buy tickets from Shanghai or can I also buy tickets for a train originating elesewhere?
We want to get to Urumqi and then to Kazakhstan. I hope we can get hard sleepers a day or two later but we could also get a sleeper to Xian and another train from Xian to Urumqi.
Thanks a lot. |

These are called 异地票 yidi piao "different place tickets." They're available from some stations for departures for some other stations, and it's difficult to be much more specific than that, though the closer the two stations the more likely you can buy yidi piao.
So you'd probably have a much better chance getting tickets in Shanghai for trains departing Suzhou than Xi'an.
But you'll never know till you trot up to the ticket window and ask. In any event, tickets are usually available only a week or so before departure, and that alone makes ticketing in advance problematic for a long journey out to Xinjiang. |
