In March I have a 2 week trip to China. We fly into Shanghai and out of Beijing. I'm studying my LP guide for ideas but would appreciate any ideas from people who know the area or have done a similar trip.

My basic idea is a few days in Shanghai, Nanjing, and on to Xian, then to Beijing with a side trip by boat to Daliyan in the north. Not sure if I'm going to have time, but wonder if there are interesting journey breaks between Shanghai and Xian, and Xian and Beijing. Or should i forget that plan and travel up the coast?

any advice would be most welcome,

thanks,

Dominic

I really wouldn't bother with going to Dalian - though it's not bad there's really nothing especially interesting to see and March is not good time of year to take in the beaches. The boat is also more hassle than it's worth.

I think that Pingyao is often considered a good stop between Xi'an and Beijing. From Shanghai perhaps you could add Suzhou and/or Hangzhou onto your intinerary?
