SHOPPPING in CHANGCHUN

Wood Carving
Wood carving (Mudiao) is one of the oldest forms of handcraft in China, boasting a history of at least twenty millennia. Local craftsmen in Changchun are good at tailoring all kinds of oddly shaped roots into Chinese mascots as well as lifelike figures from Chinese legends and current famous people. Don't be surprised if you come by a carving bearing Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.
Bark Painting
Not all trees do find the bitter cold in winter in Changchun unbearable, the Birch trees in Changchun seem satisfied with the environment in the virgin forest just out of town. What makes the birch distinct from other species is its multi-colored layers of bark--from reddish white of the outer layer to milk, incarnadine, yellow and chocolate of the inner ones. Discovering this unique feature, local people created a new art form--bark painting (Baishan mudiao), which features all kinds of topics, ranging from the natural landscape to flora and fauna.
Dehui straw-woven wares
Straw-woven wares have already a history of over one hundred years in Changchun, the most famous ones coming from the little town of Dehui (Dehui caobian). This little town is known for its copious quantities of straw and the woven wares from here are famous for their unusual toughness, lightness, heat-insulating properties and water resistance. The straw is woven into varieties of finished products such as baskets, saddles, cushions and even carpets, and nowadays the materials used have expanded to encompass wicker, weed and cornstalk.
