Chengde Hotel Information
Most of the hotels in Chengde are neither cheap, nor of particularly good standards. If money is of no object, however, it is still possible to stay in comfort and style, almost of imperial standards (for China). The hotels are either situated in the town or within the Imperial Summer Villa, the latter being a nicer option, although you will pay for this. For budget travellers, there are a few places that may put you up, but not often willingly.
Hotel touts may approach you for accommodation. If you establish prices and location beforehand, they can be useful in ferrying you to the hotel "free" of charge. Even though you check in at 5 a.m., most hotels will let you stay until noon the next day for one night's fare.
In the Town, best hotel of the lot is the Villa Hotel (Shanzhuang binguan, Tel: 0314-2023501), at 127 Xiaonanmen lu, near to the Imperial Summer Villa gates. Doubles here range from RMB150 to around RMB500, the mid range rooms being probably best value for money.
Top of the range is the Yunshan Hotel (Yunshan binguan, Tel: 0314-2156171), where tour groups are usually sent. It is modern, clean and expensive (about RMB450 for standard doubles).
At a slightly cheaper level, and with a good garden surrounds, the Qianyang Hotel, also near to the Imperial Summer Villa, is good value and convenient.
At the slightly cheaper end of the market are the Garden Hotel and the Huilong Hotel (Huilong dasha), at the intersection of Chezhan lu and Xinju zhai.
The Chengde Hotel (Chengde binguan, Tel: 0314-2023157) at 33 Nanyingzi dajie, near to the railway station, is not of great standard, but is one of the cheapest deals in town. Doubles are upwards of RMB90.
Inside the Imperial Summer Villa, the best hotel by far is the Qiwanglou Hotel (Qiwanglou binguan, Tel: 0314-2024385), to the west of the Lizheng Gate (Lizheng men). This hotel, a three star, is designed in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911 AD) style, with pretty gardens and a quiet atmosphere to suit its location. The 27 rooms of the hotel (doubles) are RMB500/night.
Other options for staying in the Villa is to rent a Mongolian yurt for the night from the Mongolian Yurt Holiday Inn (Menggubao dujiacun, Tel: 0314-2163094), towards the east of the villa complex. The yurts are not as Genghis would have remembered, with televisions and high prices. A yurt, good for three or four people will set you back around RMB300. This area, however, is convenient for visiting the outer temples, especially the eastern group. |
