The Thousand Buddha Cave (Qianfo dong) is another attraction of the not easily accessible Zhonglou Mountain (Zhongloushan) valley, along with the many other sights of the Water Curtain Caves. This is Wushan County, although the cave is a good 50 km from Wushan itself.
The Thousand Buddha Cave holds seven chambers, mostly containing Buddhist sculptures from the Northern Zhou dynasty (557-581). The oldest of the statues dates back to the prior Western Wei dynasty (535-556) and is considered an invaluable addition to the study of ancient Chinese grotto art. Unfortunately, many of the sculptures are poorly maintained and weathered by time.
How to get there: See the coresponding section of the Water Curtain Caves.
Opening hours: 8:30 am-5:30 pm.
Cost: The ticket for Water Curtain Caves includes the cost of this attraction. |
