Birong Valley (birong xiagu) is also known as the Strange Valley to local people. The valley is situated 103km northeast of Zhongdian on the way to Xiangcheng. The river cutting through the valley roars its way through the mountains and lofty ancient trees decorate the sky line. Both sides of the valley are covered by rich vegetation.
The landform of the Birong valley is quite similar to the Shamgri-la Valley described in James Hilton's book, The Lost Horizon, with towering snow mountains, forsaken Buddhist Monasteries and beautiful vegetation.
How to get to Birong Valley : The best way to get to the valley is to join a one day tour from one of the various travel agencies in Zhongdain. A one day tour including the bus fare, admission and lunch costs RMB130. You can also rent a taxi to get there and come back within a day. This should cost around RMB250.
