At
the entrance to Sanqing Pavilion
Sanqing Pavilion was first built in the Yuan Dynasty and enlarged
in the Ming Dynasty. It is a typical Taoist temple
and ranks first among the scenic spots in the Western Hills.Eleven
halls were built on nine layers on steep cliffs and look like
"the palace in the heaven or a castle in the air".
Men of letters both ancient and modem cannot help but praise
this miracle of the world.
Let's climb up these 72 stone steps.
At
Linguan Hall
Facing us is the statue, Wang Linguan, with a red face, thre~
eyes, holding a metal whip and on a suit of armour. In
the legend of Taoism, he is a law protector, responsible for
supervising both in sky and on earth every man who breaks
the law. He also keeps guard at the entrance to the temple.
On both his sides are two attendants, one with a pen in his
hand, the other with a stamp in his hand. We'll climb up steps
again. This path leads us to DragonGate.
In
the stone Tunnel
he Dragon Gate Grotto starts from this stone tunnel. Itis
one of the most marvellous grottos in China. Since ancienttimes,
many scholars and prominent figures in praise of the scene
have left their carvings and inscriptions on the wall of stone
tunnel leading to Dragon Gate: "Opening up a New View",
"Alluring to a New Vista", "Narrow and Zigzag"
and "Suddenly Open and Bright".
At
Phoenix Rock Grotto
The Phoenix Rock Grotto is also called Stone House. In the
middle of the house is a stone table. On the ceiling, there
is a relief sculpture of phoenix, holding a book in file beak
and opening out the wings.
In 1781 in the Qing Dynasty, Wu Laiqing, a Taoist priest,
came here. In order to cultivate himself and practise
good deeds, he excavated the stone tunnel from Sanqing Pavilion
to Stone House, and then from Stone House to Ciyun
Tunnel. It took 14 years for him to complete the difficulttask.
Now, from here, on the sheer cliffs Yunhua Tunnel leads us
to Dragon Gate.
