At the end of the Ming dynasty, there was a surge in building huge residences and homes for business men and officials. A few of these fascinating buildings remain and can be found in the area south of the Zhujiang river and east of Renmin Lu. These buildings(Xiguan Dayuan) are great examples of traditional Cantonese architecture. Today the residences consist of rooms and halls still decorated in their original style and furnishings. Many of the rooms are tastefully decorated with classical furniture, lamps and lanterns, scrolls, antiques and exquisite wood carvings. At the end of the Qing dynasty there were 800 of these houses. Today, only 100 remain.
How to get there: These houses can be seen on Zheng Lu No. 13 and No. 15 are open to the public. |
